When is the Microcomputer Lab open? The Lab is open Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am to 11:00 pm; Friday 8:00 am to 5:30 pm; Saturday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm; and Sunday 1:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Please note that the Lab closes earlier than the Library.
Who can use the Microcomputer Lab? The Lab is open for use by the students, faculty and staff of UMDNJ, as well as by the staff of Kennedy Memorial Hospital/University Medical Centers. A valid UMDNJ or Kennedy ID is required for use and must be presented upon request.
What software is available on the Lab computers? The computers in the Lab are IBM-compatible PCs. The software applications available in the Lab include Microsoft Office XP (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access) and Adobe Acrobat. EndNote bibliographic software has also been installed on the computers in the Lab. There are also a variety of course-related applications, as well as links to the Library's homepage and resources. Both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer have been installed to provide online access from the Microcomputer Lab. University e-mail and other resources are available through the University portal, my.umdnj.edu.
Can you teach me how to use the computers in the Lab? Online tutorials are available for Microsoft Word , PowerPoint and Excel. In addition, the University web page offers a variety of documents providing guidance, instructions, and helpful hints on how to use a variety of software programs and online resources. Some of the course-related software packages may also include tutorials. The Library and Academic Computing Services (ACS) also offer training sessions. How do I print or save documents from the Lab computers? There is a black-and-white laser printer located in the Lab. Printing is available from all of the PCs at a cost of 10 cents per page and requires the use of a prevalued card, which may be purchased in the Copy Room at the Library. Documents created in Word, PowerPoint or Excel will be saved to a floppy disk (A: drive) unless you specify otherwise. Using the "SAVE" function will not save your document unless there is a diskette in the drive. If you need to save a file, please bring your own diskette, zip disk, flash drive or writable CD (CD-R). Floppy disks and CD-R disks are also available at the Circulation Desk for $2.00. For instructions on how to save to a CD-R, click here. Am I able to scan materials in the Lab? A scanner capable of scanning a variety of materials is available in the Lab. Standard graphic files, such as photos and illustrations, and editable (OCR) text can be created. This scanner also has the ability to scan negatives, X-rays and other transparent media. User instructions have been placed with the scanner, or may be viewed by clicking here.(MS-Word File) What if I need something that's not available on the Lab computers? A link to the Library homepage will connect you to the Library catalog, all of the Library's online databases (including a wide variety of medical and scientific journals) and links to other useful resources. Please DO NOT download, upload or install any files to the hard drive or desktop. A software program has been installed which will automatically delete any unauthorized files and the Library reserves the right to remove such files at any time.
How can I protect my files from viruses? The Library strives to provide a virus-free computing environment. Norton Antivirus Protection has been installed on all Lab computers and is updated weekly. In addition, the security program deletes any changes to the hard drive at least once per day. If you have reason to believe your disk may be infected, you should scan the disk before using it.
