Stratford Campus Training Sessions

 

 
Schedule for March/April, 2008

The Library and IST offer a series of informative sessions tailored to the needs of faculty and staff. Library programs are meant to provide introduction in an area of information management or performance improvement tools. Class size is limited. Word and PowerPoint sessions are 1 1/2 hours. All other classes are around 1 1/4 hours. All classes are held in the Library. To register for Library classes contact the Library at 6-6800 or e-mail Jenny Pierce at piercejb@umdnj.edu.

Once you have attended a Library class. Please submit an online evaluation of the class so we can better improve our courses to suit your needs.

Getting Started with Microsoft Excel

Thursday, March 6  at Noon
Wednesday, April 23  at  5:30pm

Excel can help you to create useful spreadsheets to save time and effort when entering and manipulating data. This class will provide students with a basic familiarity with the capabilities of the Excel software and introduce the terminology commonly used in creating and describing spreadsheets.
Class length: 1.5 hours


Evidence Based Practice for Nursing

In this class you will be introduced to the online resources available to support evidence based nursing practice (including books, journals, databases, and EBP websites). You will also learn how to access them, anytime-anywhere, and options for requesting resources not available at UMDNJ.

OvidSP - New

Thursday, March 13th at 5:00pm
Friday, April 18th at Noon

Ovid provides UMDNJ with over 10 different databases.  The new interface, OvidSP, adds new tools and a whole new way to search!  Natural language processing (NPL) allows users to enter a question with no need for special syntax or punctuation.  Learn how to use this new interface and how it integrates with other university resources, including full text resources.  Previous search experience is helpful but not required.

EndNote: The Essentials

Learn the basics of this powerful bibliographic management program. Attendees will learn how to enter references, import references from Ovid and other databases, work with figures and charts, change publication styles, and insert references into a paper. No previous experience with EndNote is necessary to attend this class.

Creating Great Presentations with Power Point

Learn how to create dynamic presentations using PowerPoint XP. This introductory session will address formatting concepts, incorporating graphics, printing options and other basic concepts. Detailed handouts and a practice exercise will be provided.

Tips and Tricks for Using Google

Thursday, March 20 at 9:30am

Learn about the free, specialized resources available through Google, such as Google Translator, Google Scholar, Google Images, etc. Learn how to improve your next Google search by using advanced searching techniques. This course will help you to make your searches more productive and focused.  Some experience searching Google is recommended, but not required.

What can I do with a Podcast?
Learn the basics of podcasts and podcasting in simple, easy to understand terms. This introductory session will provide information about what podcasting is and how to create a simple podcast.  Detailed handouts will be provided.  Basic computer knowledge is helpful, but not required.  Faculty and staff, particularly course administrators, are encouraged to attend.

 EndNote Web -   New

EndNote Web is web-based bibliographic program that complements the desktop version of EndNote by offering users access to the same basic functionality of the program when using multiple computers. With EndNote Web users can organize, cite, and store thousands of references imported from hundreds of databases and library catalogs.  Attendees will learn how to import references from the Ovid databases and the ISI Web of Knowledge, and organize references intogroups.  Attendees also will and learn to insert references in the correct format into a Word document, and transfer references from EndNote Web to the desktop version of EndNote and vice versa.
