Welcome
Division of Hematology/Oncology

The division of Hematology and Oncology consists of three full-time faculty and one oncology nurse, who are committed to providing "state of the art" care to the community. Inpatient oncology services are currently provided throughout the Kennedy Health System and at two divisions of the Virtua-West Jersey Health System. Outpatient services are provided at three of the Department's ambulatory sites.

Along with clinical excellence, the division has a committment to high quality education. Research faculty participate in the teaching of medical students and residents. A fellowship in Oncology has been approved and will begin training future oncologists in the next academic year. The division is a participant in the Clinical Trials Support Unit of the National Cancer Institute, as well as members of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group. The expansion of the division was intended largely to participate in the development of UMDNJ-SOM's Cancer Institute. As part of the strategic plan, the Department of Medicine in the next several years will be playing an integral role in the development of UMDNJ-SOM's Center of Excellence in Cancer. The center will expand the school's cancer program enabling it to become a premier location for the latest in cancer care in the region.

The division offers a multidisciplinary staff providing a coordinated approach to treatment to best meet the needs of each patient. Thus, tumor specific programs have been organized to ensure that patients receive state of the art care. These include:

  • The Breast Cancer Evaluation program which offers education, risk assessment and evaluation for individuals with a family history of cancer, as well as those with established or possible breast cancer.
  • The Gastrointestinal Assessment program which addresses colorectal, gastric and pancreatic cancers which are the most common gastrointestinal cancers among americans. This comprehensive program will assure that "state of the art" approaches for patients with gastrointestinal cancers are available.
  • A Genitourinary program which addresses cancers of the kidney, ureter, bladder, prostate, urethra, penis, adrenal and testicles. It utilizes a multidisciplinary approach offering the latest chemotherapeutic and immunotherapy treatment options.

A team approach to care consisting of a medical oncologist, surgeon, radiation oncologist and nurse will assure comprehensive, competent and holistic care. The division is committed to the highest quality of care for its patients.
