UNIVERSITY POLICY ON REMOVAL OF

ORIGINAL RESEARCH DATA AND MATERIALS

FROM THE UNIVERSITY

It is the University's policy that original research data and material created at the University remain indefinitely at the University and may not be removed from the University.  In the rare instances when removal of original research data or materials is desirable for good reason, written permission must be obtained beforehand from the P.I. or laboratory head, Department Chair, Research Dean and Dean by means of standard forms available in your Research Dean's office and at:

The University intends to enforce this policy for the excellent reasons set forth in the Guidelines for Investigators in Scientific Research which can be found at:

  http://www.umdnj.edu/acadweb/Guidelines.pdf

These reasons include:

 * Original research data and materials should be continuously available to individuals involved in the research within the research group.

 * Original research data and materials should be available to other investigators if the original work needs to be repeated or if questions arise (including questions about the propriety of the conduct of  the research).

 * The University must be able to fulfill it's institutional responsibilities and comply with applicable laws and governmental regulations, such as the University's obligation to investigate allegations of research misconduct.
