Cell
and Molecular Biology Program
The Stratford
Division of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) of
UMDNJ grants the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and a research based
Master of Science (M.S.) degree through its Cell and Molecular Biology
Program. The M.S. degree is awarded as part of the Ph.D. program.
In addition, the GSBS also participates in the dual degree program
awarding the D. O./Ph.D degree in conjunction with the School of
Osteopathic Medicine (SOM). Admission to the D.O./Ph.D. combined
degree program requires the separate approvals of the admissions
committees of both the SOM and the GSBS-Stratford Division.
The student must first be accepted into the D.O. program of the
SOM before applying to the GSBS-Stratford Division.
The Ph.D.
is awarded based on coursework, a comprehensive qualifying examination,
and a thesis dissertation. The qualifying exam evaluates the
breadth of knowledge and independent thinking. While conducting
the laboratory research, the candidate must demonstrate ability
to initiate, perform and analyze original experimental work.
The degree is granted upon satisfactory completion of 40 credit
hours of course work and 40 credit hours of thesis research, including
a written dissertation, a public defense and final oral examination.
