ADIPOSE TISSUE

# 25 - Adipose tissue, human

Adipose tissue is a specialized type of connective tissue. Loss of the single large fat droplet in each adipocyte during the fixation process results in a large empty space surrounded by a thin rim of cytoplasm. Cell nuclei in this thin band of cytoplasm give a signet ring appearance to these white (unilocular) fat cells. (There is another type of fat cell, brown adipocytes, found in fetuses or newborns, with a very limited amount occurring in adults. Brown fat cells are important for heat production in newborns.)

This is a shot of adipose tissue. The blue dotted lines are outlining the Adipocytes. The orange double headed arrows are pointing to where the fat droplets would have been found with in the rim of cytoplasm and the green arrows are pointing to the nuclei of the adipocytes.

Blue dotted lines - Adipocytes

Orange Arrows - Fat droplet "space"

Green Arrow - Nuclei of Adipocyte
