Pyloric Stomach

Using your scanning (4x) lens, note the rugae composed of mucosa and submucosal layers.

Identify the gastric pits and note that they extend deeper into the mucosa than those in the fundic region and are also more open. Some of the pits may be branched. Observe that all the gastric glands are within the mucosa, i.e., above the muscularis mucosae. The pyloric glands are relatively short and coiled and may have a grey or bluish color (due to mucin). Do you see chief cells and / or parietal cells in the mucosa ? Compare the cellular components of the glands in each of the three regions of the stomach.

Here is an image of the Pyloric Stomach. The red arrow is pointing to it's Mucosa, the green arrow is pointing to the Submucosa, the yellow arrow is pointing to the Muscularis Mucosa, and the blue arrow is pointing to the Muscularis Externa. If you would like to see Auerobach's Plexus, in between the two layer of the muscularis externa refer to Lab 8. The black arrows are pointing to the characteristic of the pyloric stomach that is an important hint at identifying it, and that is the Deep Gastric Pits.

This is a closer look at the Gastric Pits of the pyloric stomach, indicated by the blue arrows. Notice how deep they go, compared to the other two sections of the stomach we have seen. This is the Clue to identify the pyloric stomache.
