The middle region of the esophagus will have a mixture of striated and smooth muscle in the external muscle layers. Identify these tissues. Note the thickened band of the muscularis mucosae in this middle section of the esophagus. Neuronal plexuses (Auerbach's plexus) are visible between the inner and outer layers of the muscularis externa. The muscularis mucosae becomes thicker distally in the esophagus.
