Introduction

The internal female reproductive system consists of two ovaries, two oviducts or Fallopian tubes, the uterus, and the vagina.

The ovaries, in addition to producing germ cells or ova, also secrete at least two steroid hormones, estrogen and progesterone. At ovulation, the oviduct captures the expelled ovum from its ovary and transports it towards the uterus. If the ovum is not fertilized, it is shed along with the thickened endometrial uterine lining during menstruation. If the ovum is fertilized, it implants into the uterus which accommodates, nourishes, and protects the growing conceptus, and at term, delivers the baby.

The histological picture of the female reproductive system, including the mammary glands, varies a great deal depending upon the rhythmic changes in circulating hormones produced by the ovary, pituitary, and hypothalamus, as well as by the placenta during pregnancy.
