Urethra

| # 145 - Urethra, human female, H & E |

Begin by scanning the slide with the lowest power objective. What is the shape of the lumen? Observe the epithelium of the mucosa. If this section were taken through the part close to the bladder, the epithelium should be transitional. The epithelium forms invaginations (lacunae) and contains intraepithelial mucous glands. The rest is mainly stratified squamous, but there may be areas of stratified columnar or pseudostratified columnar. Under this, loose connective tissue contains elastic fibers and a plexus of veins. The muscularis is poorly defined with innner longitudinal and outer circular fibers. The distal portion contains circular skeletal muscle found in the urogenital diaphragm that serves as a voluntary sphincter. References: Ross - Chapter 19 Gartner - Chapter 16 Wheater - Chapter 16 |

This is a cross section of the Urethra. The blue arrow is pointing to the Lumen of it. The Urethra connects the Bladder to the outside world and takes the urine out of the body. The black arrow is pointing to the Epithelium of the urethra, which again is Transitional Epithelium. Blue arrow - Lumen of Urethra Black arrow - Transitional Epithelium
This is a close up shot of the Epithelium (red arrow) of the Urethra. Notice the transitional Characteristic of it.
